This year's winners of the Vestavia Hills Chamber of
Commerce Business of the Year award have found success selling
everything from books to color copies to custom-fitted lingerie.
Two entrepreneurs shared the honor in the retail
category: Janet Holcomb, owner of The Fitting Touch, and Linda
Brown, owner of Milestone Books. Both businesses are in the Vestavia
Hills City Center.
Brown, a member of the chamber board for 2007,
served last year as the chamber's vice president of education and
has helped improve its Partners in Education program.
Among her civic efforts, Holcomb served this year as
vice president of community affairs for the chamber, coordinating
the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, the I Love America Summer Celebration
Series and other events.
In the service category, the winner was Jim
Anderson, owner of Kwik Kopy Printing and The UPS Store in Vestavia
Hills.
A former president of the chamber board, Anderson
has worked to promote shopping in Vestavia Hills and to support
economic development efforts. He helped create the Rocky Ridge Fall
Festival and has long been involved with the chamber's Partners in
Education program, which helps meet the needs of the city's schools
by linking them with businesses.
Chamber board members selected winners from
nominations received in November. Criteria included employee
relations, customer relations, civic involvement and support for
chamber efforts.
"Businesses that are successful, like these three,
are out in the community, and they're involved in a lot of different
things," said Karen Odle, the chamber's executive director.
Success in business is all about relationships, she
said. "All of these businesses have that common denominator."
Business of the Year awards will be presented along
with other chamber awards at the chamber's monthly luncheon in
January.
